As some of you may have noticed from Ted’s comment yesterday, I did leave out a detail from our Tuesday night, not intentionally though. Our neighbor John called us in the midst of the Big Potty Moment and asked me if I liked deer meat. I had to be truthful and say that well, I’ve never had deer meat before, to which he responded that he had just made up some burgers, half deer meat, half beef and would we be interested in a couple? Well, as many of you know I am not brave when it comes to trying new foods. Ted however will give most things a try. So I handed the phone to Ted who promptly said that yeah, a couple of burgers sounded good. A few minutes later John was at our door step with two freshly grilled burgers all made up with cheese and a bun. To which a conversation ensued between the two of them about how unadventurous I am with trying new foods. Well, what was I do but “belly up” and try a bite of the burger? I didn’t even put ketchup on it first, usually a must for me. In all honesty, it was a pretty good burger; I could not taste what some describe as a “gamey” flavor, probably because it was 50/50 beef and deer. However, in my mind I had a tough time overcoming the fact that I was eating deer. I don't know how brave I would be to try a full out deer burger. Ted didn’t have that problem at all, he dug right in. In fact, he took my burger for lunch the following day.
So thanks go out to our neighbor John in expanding our palettes a bit. I’m not sure that it will become a frequent part of my diet but it once again proves that trying new things isn’t so bad!
We’ve also had two nights in a row with the potty! You go Miss K.!

Turtle Pumpkin Pie
A little lunchtime post today. First off, I have to comment on the absolute delish lunch I am enjoying, courtesy of Ted. Curried chicken with rice and zucchini....yummm! As I've mentioned before, Ted does the majority of the cooking in our house. There's no other way to put it, he's better at it than me. He has the knack of being able to go over to the pantry and take a little of this, a little of that and viola! a wonderful meal. You don't want to know what happens when I try that, it's not horrible but it's not wonderful either. Plus, Ted enjoys finding new recipes. I have my staples that I can make well and I tend to stick to those. I may have a Ph.D. but I'll be honest, recipes overwhelm me. I'll stick to cleaning up after the meal.
Since the Ted does the cooking, he also is the primary grocery shopper. Katherine and I usually end up wandering down the aisles behind him ("Can we get this Dad, can we please?"). He is better at visualizing a week's worth of meals and pulling a shopping list together. I am super slow at the supermarket and I tend to come home with a bunch of "extras". Or I'll be fixated on the fact that we need paper towels or something and I'll forget everything else that we need.
I think I like "the idea" of cooking, fancy stuff from Williams-Sonoma and all that. We get a couple of recipe magazines (Taste of Home and Cooking for 2) which I love to look at, especially since they include pictures of every recipe (yes, I need to see the picture first). When it comes to the actual execution of those recipes, not so much, I'll leave that to Ted for the most part.
The other night I was looking at the latest Taste of Home which had all kinds of recipes for Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving. Lots of good eats. Then, I happened upon this one (I think I would substitute peanuts for the pecans). I don't know how many pumpkin pie lovers there are out there but I do know of at least one kindred spirit who is reading this right now and going "Oh yeah!"...my cousin Alyson. Ask her about the Thanksgiving (or Christmas?) dinner in which someone forgot (for shame!) about the pumpkin pie. At the leftover dinner the next night (which in our family is also Margarita Night), there was Aly and I down at Stop & Shop buying our pumpkin pie, attempting to unthaw it in a jiffy, and then shoving spoonfuls of it (covered in cool whip of course) into our mouths. Don't come between us and our Pumpkin Pie.
Last year, I was sick on Thanksgiving so the thought of eating pumpkin pie (or anything for that matter) was not a pleasant one. Maybe I'll attempt this tasty little treat this year.
