We had the official goodbye to paci this past Friday. Yes, we had attempted to give it up back in the fall after the tooth incident but we were in danger of having a toddler using the TV as a sleep aid so we relented. By last month Katherine was down to her last one and she was warned that once she chomped through that one there would be no more paci. A rip developed Friday that warranted it being tossed. Surprisingly it was pretty uneventful for her, she showed Daddy that paci was broken and went to the trashcan in her bathroom and threw it away. Done. End of story.
Almost. We frequently had to remind her at bedtime and nap time that paci "is broken" and that she is now a big girl. I caught her once looking through the trash for it ("oops, I really didn't mean to throw it away"). An actual nap was non-existent this past weekend which is interesting since she hasn't used a pacifier for nap time at daycare in over a year and a half. Bedtime went a whole lot smoother than I thought it would but it does take her a while to calm herself down. And the menagerie of stuff that needs to come to bed with her now...books, stuffed animals, water bottle, all tucked up around her. She doesn't do much with the stuff but I think she feels more secure having it there, just in case. I think we're over the tough part now, she didn't ask for it last night. She did however ask to take her new toothbrush to bed with her. I picked up this toothbrush at Wal-Mart with a suction cup on the end so you can stick it to the counter after you brush your teeth (best $1 I have ever spent). She thinks it's the greatest invention ever. Last night, it was suction cupped to the windowsill right next to her bed, just in case she had the urge to brush her teeth at 2am.
