Our Graduate

She was so proud of herself.  I thought preschool graduation would make me cry, my baby girl is going to Kindergarten this fall!  Instead I smiled through the whole thing, it was absolutely adorable.  Here's a few pictures, notice the gradual loss of graduation garb as the event rolled on...Miss K wasn't the only one that didn't make it to the end with the cap, gown and sash all on.

Catch up

It’s amazing how an unexpected day home from the office can throw your carefully organized work life into chaos. I spent most of the morning familiarizing myself with my calendar (wait, when was that meeting?) and have discovered that I have the distinct pleasure of being triple booked on Thursday. Nice. I know I’ll have it all straight by the time I leave this place today.

Yup, Friday was a day home with the little man who came down with his very first ear infection. The call came at 4:30 just as I was about to head out the door to expect a feverish baby. Obviously it was too late to consider a pedi appointment, so the choices were either an urgent care visit that night or hold him off until the following morning. We chose to wait until morning and let ibuprofen do its work overnight. Surprisingly he slept fairly well. But Friday morning brought a 103 degree fever. Poor little guy looked down right pathetic. And maybe the sick gods took pity on him because for whatever reason I got right through to the pediatrician at 8:03 and was asked if I could be there by 8:30. Never has it been that smooth to make an appointment with them. Could we make it there for 8:30??? You betcha.

I was actually expecting the diagnosis to be strep, since that is what is going around his classroom right now. Either way, the antibiotic is taking care of it and let me just tell you this kid is taking his medicine like a champ. The fever subsided gradually over the course of the weekend, which was good because Papa and Gram Coberly were in town and it’s no fun to entertain guests when you’re feeling under the weather. By Monday he seemed to be pretty much back to his ol’ self, which was a relief for Ted and I because we had a mini-spa day planned for his birthday (which was yesterday). It would have been a real bummer to have to cancel everything in order to stay home with a sick kid (ok, ok, you know which one of the pair would have ended up canceling HER appointment). Off both kids went to daycare and off Ted and I went to this cute little salon and spa that just opened up in Knightdale. Yours truly is typing right now with some red fingernails that Katherine has declared are bee-yoo-tee-ful. I haven’t had painted fingernails in YEARS. We’ll see how many diapers changes they make it through.

I’m expecting a full report this afternoon from Katherine from her class’ field trip to the movies today. That’s right, those directors and teachers are gluttons for punishment as they took 15 plus 4 and 5 year olds to the morning matinee of Kung Fu Panda 2. They were even planning on getting each kid a popcorn and soda. That’s called loving your job.

First one of the season

Last month we planted our garden. We decided to be more adventurous this year and give zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, and four different types of herbs a try in addition to the standard tomato plants.  We gave seeds a go early in the spring and were initially successful.  Unfortunately, most of them did not survive the transition from the indoors to the outdoors thanks to a massive rainstorm that happened literally the day after we planted them.  Thanks a bunch Mother Nature. Maybe we'll get better at that next year.

Problems with seedlings aside I'm happy to report that we're doing quite well with this year's garden, better than either of the previous years.  Maybe it takes a few years to get into the routine (much the same with pool maintenance I might add).  Everything seems to be growing at an epic rate.  We've already used the fresh basil in multiple recipes, there's a ton of flowers on the zuchini plant and plenty of green tomotoes starting up as well.  Up there you see the very first red tomato of the season, a cute little cherry one.  Good thing I shot that picture when I did...seems that Ted snatched it up less than one hour later when he went outside to turn off the pool filter.  You have to be quick around our house.

Our weekend was pretty much spent around the house, in the pool...and for Katherine...giving her Disney Princess Slip n Slide a try for the first time this year.  She does have a bit more gusto in her leap this time around but I don't think she has the weight yet to carry her from one end to the other.  I even agreed to letting her soap down the thing in hopes that it would give her a little more "slide".  No such luck.  Maybe next weekend Mom will take to it to show her how it's done.  Then again, Papa and Gram Coberly will be down, maybe they can take a run on it instead...

Shameless

With temps in the 90s for most of this week, summer has arrived unofficially to North Carolina. For us this means the first dip in the pool last weekend, watering the summer garden and watching the crabgrass slowly take over our lawn. At least it’s green and cushy on your feet.

Katherine had a ball splashing in her pool for the first time this season. I was amazed at how much she had grown since last summer; the water now comes to her stomach. Ted was the brave one here; the two of them were splashing around like fishes. Teddy on the other hand was not too impressed with the pool. Just like his mother, the water was too cold for those little legs. The second we put him in his little float he started crying. There was a repeat performance on Sunday. The little guy was content to sit in his swing and watch his Daddy and big sister splash around instead.

And that water table picture down there? Call us just plain shameless.  There are currently four houses for sale in our small neighborhood.  One happens to be right next door to us.  It's been on the market for a good nine months or more now, price reduced a few times.  The people that owned it before weren't exactly the friendly type so I am desperately hoping that a nice family moves in with a little girl for Katherine to play with.  On Sunday in the midst of trying to find a calm inside activity for two kids that had been in the sun long enough, we looked out our kitchen window to see just such a family pull up to take a look at the house.  Two kids, a little girl and a boy, were in tow.  So what did we do? Yup, that's right, grab the kids, take them outside and set them up in the front yard.  Parade our family in front of them in hopes that "See, look dear there are kids in the neighborhood! My, don't they look friendly!  Oh yes, we want to put an offer on this house today!"  That was Sunday.  It's Wednesday and no SOLD sign has appeared.  Hopefully our little tactic didn't backfire... "My GOD Hank, look at those people next door!  Why do they keep staring at us with those long faces?"

We may have drastic improvements in the sleep arena but it's too early to tell for sure and you know I'm not going to jinx anything by spilling those beans too soon.
